Fungi

Normally we are only aware of fungi when we come across mushrooms, generally in autumn, though at Abbey Fields some appear in mid- to late summer. Bracket fungi on trees can be evident for much of the year. See here for more information.

Do we have toadstools? That’s up to you: there is no precise definition separating mushrooms and toadstools though it is commonly inferred that toadstools are poisonous mushrooms. BEWARE! There are many fungi called mushrooms that are also poisonous.

So, when walking in Abbey Fields, enjoy the sight of our mushrooms, take a picture if you want, but always wash your hands well if you have touched a mushroom. Importantly, never pick Abbey Fields mushrooms to eat – even the experts can have difficulty telling which are safe.
