Hedge restoration work parties at Long Meadow
With hedge planting imminent – a family-based planting event will be held on Sunday 1st December - we have an urgent need to complete the preparation of the ground ready for planting. There will be two additional work parties at Long Meadow:
Sunday 17th November, at 10.30 – this REPLACES a scheduled work party at Croft Close
Saturday 23rd November, at 2pm.
These will both involve grubbing out of bramble and digging over the soil ready to plant into on December 1st.
We start by the fence at the village end of Long Meadow.
Please register in advance by emailing sitemanagers@abbeyfields.online. This allows us to let you know if the work party has to be cancelled, and also to ask you, if you can, to bring specific tools to suit the planned tasks.
Please come dressed for the weather, with stout footwear and gloves.

Hedge Planting Family Event at Long Meadow
We are finally ready for some planting! Our small bare root plants (“whips”) are coming, and we are looking for families to come and help us plant up the first section of the hedge.
We will be planting a mix of species to restore the hedge and make it more wildlife-friendly.
We will also have some fun and creative activities, and hot drinks available.
Just pop along any time between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm to join in the fun.
Enter Long Meadow by our flag – the planting section is close to the Abbey Farm entrance.
Please come dressed for the weather and the rough grass and muddy ground. Note, there is no car parking here.
This event is free, thanks to an award from the Postcode Places Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.

Help remove invasive trees from the WI Wood
The WI Wood – also known as Histon Wood – sits beside the Busway opposite Manor Field and the Histon & Impington Community Orchard.
In recent years this woodland has been invaded by evergreen oaks, an alien species: for more information see here.
The Parish Council have been granted permission by Cambridgeshire County Council (who own the wood) to remove these alien oaks.
There are several hundred saplings to remove! We are inviting volunteers to come and assist on:
Saturday 11th January 10:30am to 12:30pm
Saturday 25th January 2:30pm to 4:30pm
Saturday 15th February 10:30am to 12:30pm
Please meet beside the Busway access track where the path dividing the two halves of the wood takes off.
Please wear suitable footwear and clothes and bring work gloves. We hope many of the saplings can be pulled out by hand, but some digging may be needed – so spades, trowels and forks might be useful.
Children are welcome where under the supervision and responsibility of a parent or carer but are not covered by the volunteers insurance for this activity.
The work is being done under the auspices of the Parish Council and is being supported by Histon & Impington Green Spaces.
All are welcome
It is not necessary to register in advance but it will help with our planning if you can drop a line to sitemanagers@abbeyfields.online to say you hope to join.

Stall on The Green – Histon & Impington Green Spaces 2025 Calendar
Come and see a display of the 13 winning photographs that make up the 2025 calendar. As last year we invited the community to pick the calendar cover picture by a public vote on the local Facebook groups. Our thanks to all the photographers who entered the competition and to those who took part in the vote – we think that the resulting calendar is a splendid showcase of our “Connecting with Nature” theme.
This is your opportunity to purchase the calendar - costing £10.

Hedge restoration work parties at Long Meadow
We need your help as we start work on our ambitious plans for restoring the Park Lane hedge to produce a dense thick hedge offering better habitat for hedgerow species. (Details of our restoration plans and the grant funding supporting this initiative here.)
This autumn we will also be doing preparatory work for the planting of three new trees in the avenue – the next phase in our plans for the avenue.
We are running three sessions over the weekend 12th/13th October to prepare target hedge sections for future replanting*. The preparation includes cutting down and removal of non-hedge plants, such as bramble and ivy, and putting up temporary fencing. Come prepared for some quite demanding physical activity!
We start by the fence at the village end of Long Meadow.
Please register in advance by emailing sitemanagers@abbeyfields.online . This allows us to let you know if the work party has to be cancelled, and also to ask you, if you can, to bring specific tools to suit the planned tasks.
Please come dressed for the weather, with stout footwear and gloves.
* The replanting will be done later in the season when bare-root whips are available. We hope that families will be able to help us with this and will be advertising the date/time as soon as we can.

Walking stick guided walk at Croft Close Set-aside County Wildlife Site
A general introduction to the site explaining why it has been accorded the status of a County Wildlife Site.
The walk has been designed to offer an opportunity for those less sure on their feet to experience the site for themselves. Whilst participants need to be able to walk over uneven ground we will be proceeding slowly with frequent stops to admire the views and listen quietly for the birds. Those of you with a walking stick seat or light folding stool are welcome to bring them, and more able companions are of course welcome.
We start at the Croft Close entrance to the Set-aside (CB24 9HU). Regrettably, there is no parking here.
To attend the guided walk please register interest by emailing sitemanagers@abbeyfields.online. (If there is high demand, numbers may have to be limited.)
There is no charge for the walk but donations will be taken on the day (alternatively see https://www.higreenspaces.org/donate).
