Monthly summer work parties at Croft Close Set-aside
Why not join one of our regular work parties (third Tuesday of the month over the summer). To minimise disturbance to wildlife, these light-duty work parties will concentrate on controlling young brambles emerging in the grassy areas. We will keep clear of potential nest sites and avoid dwelling long in any location.
We start at the Croft Close entrance to the Set-aside.
Please register in advance by emailing sitemanagers@abbeyfields.online . This allows us to let you know if the work party has to be cancelled, and also to ask you, if you can, to bring specific tools to suit the planned tasks.
Please come dressed for the weather, with stout footwear, sun hat and gloves. Secateurs will always be handy. Suntan lotion and some water are also a good idea if it is a hot day.
Walking stick guided walk at Croft Close Set-aside County Wildlife Site
A general introduction to the site explaining why it has been accorded the status of a County Wildlife Site.
The walk has been designed to offer an opportunity for those less sure on their feet to experience the site for themselves. Whilst participants need to be able to walk over uneven ground we will be proceeding slowly with frequent stops to admire the views and listen quietly for the birds. Those of you with a walking stick seat or light folding stool are welcome to bring them, and more able companions are of course welcome.
We start at the Croft Close entrance to the Set-aside (CB24 9HU). Regrettably, there is no parking here.
To attend the guided walk please register interest by emailing sitemanagers@abbeyfields.online. (If there is high demand, numbers may have to be limited.)
There is no charge for the walk but donations will be taken on the day (alternatively see https://www.higreenspaces.org/donate).
See magical moths and beautiful birds close up
See, close up, moths collected overnight. See birds in the hand and find out more about the birds to be found locally. Previously we have had a fantastic catch of moths, and our regular ringing team will have plenty to show you and tell you about our birds including our summer visitors.
Just pop along any time between 09:00 am and 11:00 am to see either of the demonstrations. We look forward to seeing as many children at the demonstrations as possible as there is nothing quite like the experience of getting really close to wildlife.
The event will be free. Donations to Histon & Impington Green Spaces to help with the upkeep of the site welcomed!
Join us at the Croft Close entrance to the Set-aside (CB24 9HU). Croft Close is a residential street so please respect our neighbours – as this is early come and leave quietly.
Please come dressed for the weather and rough ground.
Fingers crossed for fine weather!

The mysterious world of Cambridge's dragonflies - Talk by Duncan Mackay
Did you know that more species of dragonflies and damselflies have been recorded in the City of Cambridge than at Wicken Fen!
Duncan Mackay is back to tell us more surprising facts about our local wildlife. Duncan Mackay authored the chapter on dragonflies in Cambridge Natural History Society’s book The Nature of Cambridge
This time it’s those really exciting and mysterious creatures that we can see every summer– dragonflies and damselflies! Creatures whose ancestors were around with the dinosaurs can be encouraged to visit even a small garden pond.
In the chill of February this is a reminder of the prospects for summer wildlife spotting.
Doors open at 7pm with the presentation to start at 7:30pm.
Tickets for the event are available by clicking on the button below
Adults - £5, Under 18s - £3
There will be a raffle on the night.

Help remove invasive trees from the WI Wood
The WI Wood – also known as Histon Wood – sits beside the Busway opposite Manor Field and the Histon & Impington Community Orchard.
In recent years this woodland has been invaded by evergreen oaks, an alien species: for more information see here.
The Parish Council have been granted permission by Cambridgeshire County Council (who own the wood) to remove these alien oaks.
There are several hundred saplings to remove! We are inviting volunteers to come and assist on:
Saturday 27th January 2pm to 3:30pm
Saturday 10th February 10:30am to 12:30pm
Please meet beside the Busway access track where the path dividing the two halves of the wood takes off.
Please wear suitable footwear and clothes and bring work gloves. We hope many of the saplings can be pulled out by hand, but some digging may be needed – so spades, trowels and forks might be useful.
Children are welcome where under the supervision and responsibility of a parent or carer but are not covered by the volunteers insurance for this activity.
The work is being done under the auspices of the Parish Council and is being supported by Histon & Impington Green Spaces.
All are welcome
It is not necessary to register in advance but it will help with our planning if you can drop a line to sitemanagers@abbeyfields.online to say you hope to join.

Sadly, we lost another of the magnificent horse chestnuts in the avenue this year, making our restoration programme all the more important and urgent. With Feast funding we are starting NOW and you can get involved.
We need to prepare two plots ready for the first planting. No small undertaking! We have two work parties - it might take more, it depends how many of you come to help. We will have a mix of activities – how energetic you want to be is up to you.
Join us in starting a new chapter for this historic feature.

The pond has been part of a heritage landscape going back to at least Anglo-Saxon times at the dawn of the village settlement.
Come along to hear about the dredging of the East Pond on Croft Close Set-aside (CCSA) and find out more about Histon’s local history told through each of the items on display in the library.
Arnold Fertig will provide an explanation of the pond dredging and what the finds can tell us about local history. You can find a news article on the exhibition in the library here.
