Bird Ringing at the Community Orchard

The soon-to-be-launched Friends Group for the land known as Abbey Fields got a boost on Saturday August 7th through the bird ringing picnic at the community orchard.

Arnold Fertig from the Transitional Management Group organised a gazebo and stand where people could find out more information and pick up a flier telling them how to sign up for more information and to register for the inaugural meeting of the Friends, at the Baptist Church at 7.30 on September 9th.

On the day, a total of 11 birds were ringed by RSPB volunteers: eight great tits, two robins and a bluetit. Ringing has been carried out around the country for over 100 years and helps keep track bird population numbers and migration.

Dozens of families braved the drizzle to watch the ringing and to visit the hedgehog information stand as well as hear snippets of fascinating information from Arnold and other helpers.
