Long Meadow Grass Cutting
July 2022
As some of you will have noticed already, earlier this week the meadow had a haircut. After consulting with the relevant experts, the Abbey Fields Team had agreed that it should be mown once the grass was tall and dry enough to be cut for hay for use locally as sheep feed. This is part of the long-term strategy to reduce the volume of grass in the meadow to allow more wildflowers to take hold, enriching the wild flower population and diversity. This follows on from a cut early this year to remove grass before the wildflowers started growing. Another cut may be done in late summer. With the help of volunteers, the status of the wildflowers will continue to be closely monitored throughout the year.
