Family fun ‘connecting with nature’ despite the weather!
Our third April Nature Hunt event for families at Long Meadow was not favoured by the weather. Instead of the t-shirts and shorts evident in 2022, photographs this year show everyone wrapped up against the cold and damp. Still, we all managed to have a good time (even the volunteers who set up the stalls in the rain!).
We had the help of the Histon & Impington Hedgehog Champions on this year’s first quiz question. They had plenty of props including hedgehog poo! Then we moved on to frogs and ponds, with lots of children jumping to try to outdo the frog by jumping more than their height. There were some budding athletes but the frog still won (it can manage at least twice its body length).
Then at the very far end of the meadow, in a sea of tall cow parsley, we had a challenge with six flowering plants to identify, all to be seen on Long Meadow in April. The fourth question was all about ladybirds. It seems that not all ladybirds are red with black spots, and what is more they don’t all eat greenfly.
Then it was back to base to choose a reward, a nature book.
As usual for this event, you can find out more about all these things on our website here.
As well as the familiar play doh activity, children could fill a paper pot with compost and marigold seed to take home to encourage butterflies and other insects. We are grateful to the three IVC students who enthusiastically helped us with these activities.
The array of cakes was very welcome at the end of the nature trail – taking everyone’s mind off the cold (7.5 Celsius).
Thanks to all the families who came; and to the HIGS volunteers, HI Hedgehog Champions and IVC students who made all this happen.
The event was supported by an award from the Postcode Places Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
