Entertainment for all at the Family Nature Hunt
The Quiz this year featured a pesky parakeet, the delightful banded-demoiselle damselfly, and the possible winners from our new hedge planting for wildlife. At the furthest point from the cake sales, Nigel Butcher had a wonderful array of animal droppings! As if the droppings were not interesting enough, Nigel also dissected several barn owl pellets to reveal what the owl had been eating for supper - which fascinated the children and their parents. you can find background information on this year’s quiz topics here https://abbeyfields.online/nature-quiz-april-2025.
We had plenty going on in the Activity Tent. We had fun with Play Doh, and this year also a craft activity making a flower picture to take home. We also had our message tree hung with drawings and messages from people of all ages about what they love about Nature.
We took the opportunity to talk to visitors about HIGS and our site management plan survey. And of course, our bakers did us proud with a selection of very appetising cupcakes and cookies.
H&I Hedgehog Champions joined us with a display about their campaign to get more hedgehog highways across the villages.
The event was as usual supported by a large team of enthusiastic volunteers, including six students from the International Sixth Form at IVC. Without all this volunteer effort, both behind the scenes beforehand (baking, getting props together, publicity and IT) and around the field on the day, we could not put on such a complex event.
The event was supported by our grant from the Postcode Places Trust.
This grant also paid for the new hedge plants and the fence and firm path making up our new pedestrian entrance to the field.
