Feast funding to kick start Long Meadow avenue reinstatement

We are delighted to have secured £500 Feast funding which will initiate our proposed long-term programme for the reinstatement of the avenue of imposing trees at Long Meadow. The avenue, originally 13 horse chestnut trees, already appears on the 1886 Ordnance Map, suggesting that the trees were planted nearly 200 years ago. Sadly, they are now in poor health and 6 of the original 13 have been affected by a fatal disease, died, and been removed in recent times. The remainder will almost certainly follow suit.

Before the end of the year we will plant two replacement trees with protective surrounds. This initial planting will be used to launch a sponsorship programme for further replacements, and as more of the remaining trees fail, this will eventually lead to the completion of a new line in future years. As the trees mature and grow, the avenue will once more become a significant feature in the village scene.

Our thanks go to the Feast Committee for their generous support.
