Site Management Opportunities

We are always looking for help with hands-on activities to manage the Abbey Fields sites. Sometimes we need volunteers with specific skills, other times all that is needed is enthusiasm and a willingness to work to direction. We provide training, if needed, for all routine activities; sometimes as with wildlife recording this might involve mentoring long term.

Currently we are looking for assistance with:

Croft Close paths

Regular trimming vegetation back along the main paths
  • Become a “path adopter”, trimming back brambles and other vegetation at times of your own choice.
  • Consider adopting a path with a friend. Currently most paths have an adopter: we need help with the rest.

Putting up bat boxes and large bird boxes

We have some bat boxes to be fixed in suitable location
  • If you are experienced at working at height using ladders, we would like to hear from you.

Park Lane hedge trimming

Regularly trimming the hedge alongside the footpath/cycle path
  • Join our work parties, roughly monthly over the summer

Wildlife surveys

Help us find out what flora, fauna and funga are present at Abbey Fields
  • In 2022 we are surveying the flowers at Long Meadow monthly: we are looking to grow this friendly team to increase our coverage of the meadow.
  • We are looking to initiate regular insect surveys. The scope will depend on available expertise! If you have some knowledge or a willingness to learn please get in touch.

Autumn and winter are the main times when we undertake intensive site management activities. For the rest of the year maintenance activities are generally light.
